NL Design System Token Audit Report

Purpose: Manual review of the five originally-shipped organization token sets
Status: ✅ Manual review complete for the five named sets only

Scope​

This document covers only the five originally-reviewed sets — Rijkshuisstijl, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Den Haag, Rotterdam. The app now ships many more community-derived token sets (bodegraven-reeuwijk, borne, buren, … see token-sets.json). Those additional sets have NOT been individually audited by hand and are not covered by the verdict below.

Contrast for all shipped sets (including the community sets) is now verified automatically and reproducibly by the shipped-token-set-contrast-audit PHPUnit gate; read its machine-generated results in contrast-report.md, which supersedes the manual shipped-set verdict in this document.

Executive Summary​

The five organization token sets named above have been reviewed by hand and validated against official specifications and best practices from the NL Design System community. The remaining community-derived sets are not individually audited here.

Recommendations​

The five manually-reviewed token implementations are correct, complete, and production-ready. The community-derived sets are covered by the automated contrast audit, not this section.

🎯 Optional Enhancements (Low Priority)​

  1. Add more intermediate shades - Currently have primary + hover + light, could add "dark" variants
  2. Secondary color system - Some organizations have secondary palettes we haven't fully exposed
  3. Spacing tokens - Could add --nldesign-space-* for margins/padding
  4. Shadow tokens - Could add --nldesign-shadow-* for elevation

💡 Future Considerations​

  1. Dark mode variants - Could create *-dark.css versions
